OVERHELMING, MUCH?

Do you know what its like to be the new kid on the block? If movies teach you anything it’s that newbies often get bullied or abused by peers. But I was lucky. In my second week at the new school, I already felt at home. I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t fit in, but everybody had been nice.
One thing I liked about the school was the music class. The school I had better music instruments than my old school, the teacher was nice and the students were okay. On my first day in music class I got to introduce myself. I mentioned my hobbies, including playing drums. The teacher asked me to share my experiences in playing drums. So I told everyone about being in a band before I moved here. Two or three guys grinned and whispered to each other. I didn’t know what they were whispering about. I continued my story, told the class that playing in the band is really fun for me at first, but it got annoying later and I’d decided I would never play in a band ever again because of that disappointing experience. The grinning guys looked somewhat crestfallen, but one of them smirked again and whispered something to the others. I was puzzled but didn’t give it further thought at that time.

I got out of the library. The time on my watch showed 5.30 PM. I had been doing a bit of reading there, the best thing to perk me up whenever I was tired of school. However, this time my heart wasn’t in it. So, here I was, walking alone the hallway, on my way out of the school building. As I was exiting the inner front gate, I heard the clear notes of a piano. My curiosity growing, I looked around. I walked along the bushes lining the front yard, trying to find where the sound came from. Then I figured that it must be coming from the music room (duh!), so I headed toward the windows of the room facing the front yard.
I peeped in. There was a guy with short, straight black hair wearing black full-frame glasses. His uniform was messy. I couldn’t see his face clearly since he was hunched over the piano keys. He seemed so absorbed in his playing. I held my breath, so beautiful was the music. As if sensing my presence, he stopped playing. I was ready to hide if he looked around, but strangely, he didn’t.
He started playing again, more slowly this time. His lips were moving, like he was singing. I only heard the music, maybe because his voice was so low. I sighed. How could anyone produce such a glorious symphony?
Suddenly, the light went out,. Startled, I moved away from the windows. Drats, there went my blissful moment! Oh, well, I guessed it was time to go home. I didn’t even realize the sun was setting and it was getting dark. I started to walk towards the school gate. And that’s when I heard the scream.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!” It was coming from the music room. I rushed back to the windows only to catch a glimpse of someone being carried away. The piano guy! Kidnapped!
Oh! My, WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS GOING ON?! What should this raw-girl-in-the-middle-of-an-unacquainted-situation do?!
My guts told me to run away as far as I could and/or report the incident to the police. But curiosity won. I couldn’t just run away. Not knowing what had happened to the piano guy. Whoever those people were might hurt the dude. I groaned, but I knew the bull by the horns.
After a few minutes of mustering up my courage, I dragged my shaking legs to the music room, trying to be as quiet as possible. Though I probably couldn’t free him myself, the least I could do was collect as many clues as possible to find and save that piano guy. Time to get down to work, Nancy Drew.

Flattening myself against the wall near the door to the music room, I hel my breath and listened for sounds from inside. Nothing. I peeked around the door. Empty. As I was goint to enter the room, I noticed something on the floor… A ROPE?
The rope led out of the room along the hallway. Instead of figuring out what the rope was doing there, I followed it. I reached a room with the sign ‘DO NOT ENTER’ on the door. Ignoring it, I made my way in. I could see well enough even in the glimmering light coming through the windows. Nobody was in the room, no signs of struggle either. Where were they? I looked around the room, puzzled.
Suddenly, someone put a rag over my face, gagging my mouth and covering my eyes. I tried to scream but the gag muffled my voice. I grabbed the hand holding the rag trying to get it off my face, but the person was too strong. I flung my arms in all directions, instinctively trying to hit my attacker. Even as I was struggling to pry his grip off, I felt myself being dragged somewhere.

The attacker finally, loosened his grip. By then I was too weak with fear to stand up straight, so he set me down on the floor. Somebody removed the rag. I had to close my eyes against the sudden assault of the light from the light bulb overhead. I squinted and found myself…in the music room!
I looked up. Four individuals, whom I recognized from my music class, stood in a circle around me, including the piano guy. He and the two other guys smirked at me, while the fourth, a girl was grinning, seemingly innocent. The girl lowered herself beside me, looked me straight in the eyes, and asked, “Care to join our school band? Our drummer broke his leg yesterday and we could really use someone with your experience. And you aced the test! Welcome aboard!”
